CLINIC / WORKSHOP / MASTER CLASS / LECTURES - CONCEPTS

Jojo Mayer has been active as a clinician for over 10 years. Appearances at industrial events, drum shows and his drum-clinics have earned him international recognition as a skilled and creative educator.
Along with his Solo-drum performances / demonstrations, Jojo Mayer's workshops and classes are geared towards his general approach to drumming and music. Besides elaborating current developments such as his "reverse engineering" of DJ / electronic beat culture like  "D'n'B", Jungle, Breakbeat, Speed Garage, House etc. to the drumset, he teaches highly evolved and sophisticated concepts of playing. Basically, the learning matter is structured into three basic categories such as:

BODY :
The "Physical Part", or "The Technical approach". Here he breaks down all the mechanics utilized in hand and foot - technique such as: the "Moeller-technique", finger- technique, traditional grip v. matched grip issues, various "upstroke / down-stoke" and "push / pull" or "reverse stroke" concepts, his approach to "heel- toe"bass drum and hi-hat technique and general evaluations on movement, stamina, control and power, posture, balance, warming-up. If required Jojo would also cover other technical peripherals like drum-tuning and equipment etc.

MIND :
The "Mental Part" or "The Conceptual approach". This category hi-lites the intellectual aspects of drumming. Jojo discusses and demonstrates his approach to stylistic issues (from traditional jazz to jungle / techno break beats), time concepts, independence, odd-meters, polyrhytms, solo structuring, phrasing, "listening & hearing" and applications of rudimental drumming into a musical context. Also, he puts the scope on other "psychological" issues such as stage-fright, mental blockades, motivation, visualisation, concentration and practice routines.

SOUL :
The "Artistic Part"or "The Emotional approach". That last category provides the biggest challenge for many students. Because of its "hands off " type of quality it probably appeals more to the advanced student or even to the accomplished player. Never the less it provides the most vital information for any serious participant. Jojo here deals with issues concerning artistic expression, projection, feel, personality, interpretation, interaction with musicians and audience, inspiration and creativity. Also, issues regarding the music business in general can become a focal point here.
While analyzing these approaches Jojo stresses the importance of creating an awareness and understanding of how these concepts work together as a whole. Regardless of the present level of the student this will provide and a good foundation for progress, inspiration and artistic growth. This is the main objective of his workshops.
