PROHIBITED BEATZ

Evolving from a current stream in urban sub culture, PROHIBITED BEATZ introduces a new kinetic hybrid between live music, DJ culture, performing & visual arts and a futuristic party event.

Drum wizard and party host Jojo Mayer has created this weekly platform in January '98  with his band NERVE at the East Village club "Izzy bar".

As a progression to this initial event and the fast  growing following, PROHIBITED BEATZ started an enormously successfull  2 year residency at the NYC hotspot "SHINE" in SO-HO. During that time P-BEATZ has established itself as the epicenter of as new movement and gained an international reputation.

More recently, PROHIBITED BEATZ has put the focus on special one off events and has promoted parties in larger locations such as the legendary CENTRO FLY.

In the pursuit to transcend the boundaries and patterns of today's mainstream club culture, PROHIBITED BEATZ sets out to create a new syntax between performers, DJ's, visuals, sound engineer and audiences. While further expanding the notion of contemporary dance music by re-introducing the visual aspect, kinetics, spontaneity, immediacy and "danger" of live music, the event initiates the process of re-evaluating and reverse engineering digital culture with a real time, interactive and organic experience. (Whew, what a sentence!)

TIME OUT NYC recently hailed "PROHIBITED BEATZ as "one of New Yorks top 10 parties". PROHIBITED BEATZ has also repeatedly been referred to as one of the most innovative club events nationwide.  By attracting a very diverse, eclectic and multicultural crowd of downtown "hipsters", the party has gathered one of the most unique and mixed audiences in New York City.

Resident DJ's SWINGSETT is hosting a roster of weekly guest DJ's featuring the cutting edge of New York's "DJ intelligence":

EMPRESS, DARA, WALLY, DOOMER, DINESH, ODI, AURA, SEOUL, DEL MAR, REID SPEED, SCORPION, COFFE, AGZILLA, MARCUS, CASSIEN, $MALL CHANGE, LION, II-CUE, COOL MARV, 4-REAL and many more.

TC IZLAM, SUPERNATURAL, JONNY Z, and POSI-D form the core of the pool of MC's who have been creating a pivotal point between the DJ's, the band and the audience.

The active ingredient in PROHIBITED BEATZ is the resident live band: Jojo Mayer's "NERVE". Representing the spearhead of a new movement, this group of NYC musicians bridges the gap between DJ culture and live music. By reverse engineering the latest trends in urban electonic music into a live performance, NERVE reaches beyond the outer limits of "drum 'n' bass", nu-skool breaks, nu-jazz, abstrakt funk and electro breakbeats, while exploring and creating new musical hybrids and mutations!

Guest band performances have included BOOMISH, FUTUREPROOF and UV-RAY to name a few.

The live jams are fueled by the "real time audio deconstruction" of ROLI MOSIMANN, whose sound engineering and production skills accelerate the live performances into sonic warp speed.

PROHIBITED BEATZ has been visually augmented by the interactive digital assaults of Gardner Post (of EBN), the sexelectro video of Feedbuck & Missy Galore and the futuristic in-flight entertainment of PAN OPTIC.
